Year 1 Starters

The year is flying by and year 1 started their Forest school sessions with a change in the weather.  The winter and early spring had been so wet, it was a welcome surprise to have a bright sunny day.  As a nice introduction to Forest School, the main session revolved around the changes of spring and the activity of the flora and fauna.  We began with identifying some of the plants we needed to be aware of, such as the brambles, and why they have prickles like they do.  The warm weather had brought all kinds of mini-beasts out of their winter hibernation, and so as the children moved around the site and explored, they came across ladybirds, bees, slugs and snails, spiders etc.

The children were tasked with getting their imaginations into thinking like a bird and building a nest.  We discussed what practical uses the nest would provide and what materials a bird may identify as good building materials.  We were lucky enough to watch a practical demonstration, from a pair of magpies that were constructing their own nest above our heads.  This brought quite a bit of excitement and inspiration!

The children thought and planned carefully, channelling their inner birds to create some thoughtful designs and builds.  What a great start, Year 1.
